The Families in Myrup

The families in Myrup

1650-1950

Myrup is situated in Vester Han Herred in Northern Jutland close to the little village of Glæde in Lild Parish. ‘Myrup’ has once constituted more than just the farm Myrupgård and a house Myruphus. Also, the neighbors in Lild Klit, as the area later is called, were in the parish register named as ’in Myrup’, which related to the village Myrup. The name Myrup doesn’t specifically belong to a farm like other farm names do but describes a greater area. This is one of the reasons why it is so difficult to do research in the Myrup name.

Myrup as a place name is very old. In a document from 1483 the name Meyrup is mentioned, and in 1552 Myrrup. From 1656 it is known in the current spelling Myrup. In the 1600s, the village Myrup still existed, even though it was beginning to disappear in the drifting sand. In ‘Hannæs Birk Tingbog’ (a legal book with summaries from the Hannæs jurisdiction) from 1631-1686 Myrup is mentioned as a village like other villages, and a farm like Ræhrgård was situated in the village Myrup. Several people are mentioned in Myrup and in Myrup Klit, and it is hard to know from the legal books who were actually living at the farm later known as Myrupgård or the house later known as Myruphus.

In the first half of the 1700s, the parish registers mention East ‘Øster’ and West ‘Vester’ Myrup, which must have been Myrupgård and Myruphouse respectively. At the end of the 1700s, there was a farm, Myrupgård and a house, Myruphus in Myrup. In the 1800s several houses were mentioned as ‘In Myrup’. Instead of Myrup, the parish registers and censuses often mentioned the nearby villages Glæde, Nørklit and Bjerget, which made it confusing.

In the censuses from the 1800s, the area around Myrup was first called Kæret By in the 1834 census and later it was called Glæde By, which covered both the village of Glæde and the Myrup area. In the 1890 census the ’Myrup’-area had changed name to Lild Klit, while the parish register still used the name Myrup. In the 1901 census the name ’Myrup’ has been crossed over and changed to ’Lild Klit’, and then it became obvious that ’Myrup’ covered more land than just Myrupgård and Myruphouse.

The parish registers from 1728 and forward and the censuses from 1787-1901 show that several families lived at the same time in the period 1700-1900 in the area called Myrup. In the 1780’ies, three families lived in Myrup with the name Myrup. The more recent families did not use Myrup as the last name.

Family I lived at Myrupgård as smallholders and copyholders until 1786, and family II lived as smallholders and copyholders at Myruphouse until 1833. I do not know yet who owned the farm before 1786 and the house before 1784, but I believe it must have been the estate Bratskov in Brovst or Aagaard in Kettrup Parish. Family III bought Myrupgård in 1786 and lived there until 1947. Family II bought Myruphus in 1784 from Niels Pedersen at Aagaard and lived there to 1833. Several families lived in the Myrup houses during the 1800s, maybe as tenants.

The following are pieced together from parish registers, censuses and legal books and it shows how the same places and houses were called differently in the parish registers and censuses.

Map of land register from the beginning of the 1800ies.

The period 1600’s

IIn the 1600’s ‘Myrup’ meant the village Myrup more than just the name of the farm. That means that far more families lived in ‘Myrup’ which makes it difficult to distinguish between the families in the village and at the farm.

In the parish register for 1646 to 1673 is the following found (there are no parish registers from before 1646):

Niels Christensen in Myrup had a daughter Zidsel in 1665. Maybe he was also the father of Family I Else Nielsdatter (1659-1742) at Myrupgård, who was married to Laurs Andersen. Both Niels Christensen in Myrup and Sidsel Axelsdatter in Myrup were mentioned as god parents in the period 1664-1669.

In 1732 Christen Christensen died in Myrup 67 years old (born in 1665) as a son of Christen Jensen and Karen Christensdatter.

The parish registers for the period 1673-1728 are unfortunately missing.

From Hannæs Birk Extract of legal books from the period 1631-1686:

Christen Christensen in Myrup died in 1631. He was married to Maren Knudsdatter and had two children - Knud Christensen born in Myrup and Ingeborg Christensdatter. Renunciation to Christen Nielsen Fröst in Myrup.

In 1631 Christen Nielsen Fröst in Myrup receives renunciation on behalf of Maren Nielsdatter, widow after Christen Christensen at Skadhave.

In 1664 Christen Nielsen in Myrup died married to Sidsel Axelsdatter, their two children inherit: Anne Christensdatter married to Niels Jensen in Skiver Klit and Maren Christensdatter married to Just Justsen in Koldkjær.

Late Niels Jensen in Myrup’s two children were in 1664 heirs to Anders Jensen in Glæde: Anne and Karen Nielsdatter, born in Myrup. Also, Anders Jensen’s sister inherit: Maren Jensdatter born in Myrup, married to Lars Jensen, Sønder Hede.

Then there was Christen Justesen in Myrup Klit. When the word ‘Klit’ is used, maybe it was neither Myrupgård nor Myruphouse, but part of the former village Myrup. In 1634 it is written that Christen Justesen in Myrup Klit was married to Kirsten Pedersdatter. He was born in 1596. He died in 1657 and was then married to Voldborg Ibsdatter. He had the following children - Maren Christensdatter married to Christen Andersen, Aggersborg, Ullerup and Niels Christensen in Myrup.

The period 1700-1750

Family I at Myrupgård

Laurs Anderssen 'of Myrup' died in 1730, 86 years old (1644-1730).  He was most likely married to Else Nielsdatter (1659-1742), who died as a widow 'of Myrup' 12 years later in 1742, 83 years old.  She was maybe the daughter of Niels Christensen in Myrup who had a daughter Zidsel in 1665. It is maybe Laurs Andersen’s children that are mentioned in the parish register: Christen Lauridsen (1691-1741), who was 'of Øster Myrup’, when he died in 1741, 50 years old, and Anders Lauridsen/Laurssen also called Anders Myrup (1689-1756), who is mentioned several times in the parish register as 'of Myrup'. He died in 1756, 67 years old, as 'of Øster Myrup'. He was married to Maren Pedersdatter (1684-1758), who died as a widow 'in Øster Myrup’, in 1758, 74 years old. She is mentioned in the parish register several times.

No later than 1749, Bodild Laursdatter (1730-1807) lived in Myrup. She most likely moved from the neighbor farm Holegård to her mother’s sister Maren Pedersdatter married to Anders Laursen Myrup in Myrup as early as 1740 when her father died.

Family II in Myruphouse (Myruphus)

In 1730 Christen Nielsen (1689-1743), also called Christen Myrup, and Maren Andersdatter (1687-1765) ’in Myrup’ had a son Niels Christensen (1730-1799). Maren Pedersdatter ’in Myrup’ was godmother at his baptism. She was a sister to Ellen Pedersdatter, who was Bodild Laursdatter’s mother. I have not found any siblings of him, so I do not know how big this family was, or for how long they lived here. When Christen Nielsen died in 1743, the vicar wrote ’of Myrup’. His widow Maren Andersdatter died in Glæde, which can mean Myrup since Glæde is a village close to Myrup.

The period 1750-1800

Family I at Myrupgård

No later than 1753, Laurs Pedersen (1730-1797), called Lars Myrup, and his wife Bodild Larsdatter (1730-1807) lived in Myrup. They married in 1753 and were both ’in Myrup’, and her uncle Anders Myrup was a groomsman. According to the parish register their children were born ’in Myrup’ between 1754-1775. At the baptism of their first child, the parish register says 'in Øster Myrup'. Their parents did not live in Myrup. Lars Pedersen came from the farm Sønder Skadhauge in Tømmerby Parish and maybe he was serving in Myrup, as he lived there when they were married. Bodild came from the neighbor farm Holegård and had moved to her aunt Maren Pedersdatter at Myrup. Lars Myrup was a copyholder at Myrup and the family moved from Myrup in 1786 to the farm Madsbøll in Hjardemål Parish, where he then became a copyholder.

Family III at Myrupgård

In 1786 Thøger Pedersen Buck from Vust Parish sold the property Myrupgård for 395 Danish rigsdaler to Niels Christian Pedersen (1724-1800), later called Niels Christian Myrup, and his wife Karen Pedersdatter (1730-1810) from Diernæs for 395 Danish rigsdaler. Niels Christian Pedersen came from the neighbor farm Diernæsgård, which his son Laurids Nielsen Diernæs took over.

Family II in Myruphouse (Myruphus)

In the period 1749-1799 Christen Nielsen’s son Niels Christensen Myrup (1730-1799) and his wife Maren Pedersdatter (1715-1778) lived in Myrup. According to the parish register their children were born ‘in Myrup’ in 1749-1754. Niels Myrup died ’in Myruphouse’ in 1799.

Niels Christensen Myrup’s son Christen Nielsen Myrup (1750-1829) and his wife Kirsten Jensdatter (1751-1814) lived ’in Myrup’ when their children were born in the years 1774-1790. He took over the copyholder farm from his father c. 1774. Christen Nielsen bought Myruphus 16th of June 1784 from Niels Pedersen in Aagaard.

The period 1800-1850

In the census from 1834 there were five houses mentioned as ‘in Myruphouses’, in 1840 there was only one house in Myrup, and in 1845 three houses and a farm are mentioned in ’Myrup’. In the parish register is mentioned ’Little Myruphouse’ in 1823-49, in 1840 ’on Myrup’s property’, in 1845 ’on Myrup Field’, 1847 ’Myrup Heath’ and in 1870 ’Myrupgård’s land’. In the land register from 1844 you only find Myrupgård and Myruphouse. Myrupgård and Myruphouse were later parceled out.

Family III at Myrupgård

Niels Christian Pedersen’s youngest son (III-A9) Niels Nielsen Myrup (1768-1839) took over the farm in 1809 for 400 rigsdaler. His father had died in 1800. He was often called Niels Christian Nielsen Myrup after his father. Between 1805 and 1830 Niels Myrup and his wife Mette Mortensdatter Thorhauge (1783-1848) lived at Myrupgård. Their 15 children were born ’in Myrup’ in 1805-1830. In the census from 1834 they lived at ’Myrup, a farm’. Niels Nielsen ’Myrup called’ died as ’pensioner in Myrup’ in 1839 at Myrupgård now owned by his son Niels Christian Nielsen. Being on pension (‘på aftægt’ in Danish) at that time meant that accommodation and support were provided by the new owner of the property for its former owner for life, especially nbya son for his parents.

The oldest son of (III-A9) Niels Nielsen Myrup (III-A9.B1) Niels Christian Nielsen (1805-1892) bought the farm with the obligation of supporting his parents for life (aftægt in Danish) for 400 rigsdaler. In 1840 the widow Mette Mortensdatter did not live at Myrupgård, but in a house in Vesten Bjerget. Niels Christian Nielsen and his wife Maren Christensdatter (1796-1878) only lived at the farm for a few years. They sold the farm in 1844.

Niels Christian Nielsen’s cousin (III-A12.B8) Palle Møller Jensen Rotbøll (1807-1860) bought Myrupgård in 1844 for 700 rigsdaler. He was unmarried, and he did not live at Myrupgård. But his cousin (III-A3.B17) Caroline Larsdatter Diernæs and her husband Christen Jensen Vabesgaard (1817-1898) did live there.

The daughter of (III-A9) Niels Nielsen Myrup’s brother (III-A3.B17) Caroline Larsdatter Diernæs (1817-1864) and her husband Christen Jensen Vabesgaard (1817-1898) got married in 1844, and the parish register says he was already the 'owner of Myrup'. But according to the legal book he did not buy parcel no. 88 Myrupgård until 30th of June 1846 from Palle Møller Jensen Rotbøll for 900 rigsdaler. In the census from 1845 widow Mette Mortensdatter lived as a pensioner at her husband’s niece Caroline Larsdatter's on ’Myrup, a farm’, and she died in Myrup in 1848.

In 1858 Christen Jensen Vabesgaard sold the parcel 88b from Myrupgård to Christen Møller Nielsen, who was married to Niels Nielsen Myrup’s daughter (III-A9.B11) Anne Nielsdatter Myrup (1824-1863). In 1881 he sold the parcel nos. 88d and 88e to Morten Jensen at Myruphus (parcel no. 89).

Family II in Myruphouse (Myruphus)

When (III-A2) Christen Nielsen Myrup’s wife Kirsten Jensdatter died in 1814 the vicar wrote ’smallholder Christen Myrup’s wife in Glæde’. In this case Glæde probably means Myrup. Christen Nielsen Myrup married again in 1816 to Johanne Jensdatter (1780-1851) from Østerild. Christen Nielsen Myrup (1750-1829) died in 1829 as smallholder ’in Myruphouse’. After his death, Johanne Jensdatter remarried in 1832 to Niels Christian Jensen Rødbro (1770-1843) from Klim Parish. She moved to Klim with him. None of Christen Nielsen’s children stayed in Myrup.

Myruphouse (Myruphus)

After (II-A2) Christen Nielsen Myrup died in 1829, other families moved into Myruphouse.

According to the census from 1834 five families lived in what was called Myruphouses. But only one family lived in the Myruphouse, that later became parcel no. 89 in the land register.:

Jens Sørensen (1797-?) from Thisted and his wife Benthe Marie Pallesdatter (1800-?) from from Lild Parish, married in 1824, bought Myruphouse in 1833 from from Niels Christian Jensen Rødbro from Klim. In 1834 they lived in ‘Myruphouses’. He was the only one of the four families in Myruphouses who was a smallholder and worked the land. In 1840 Jens Sørensen had moved from the parish to Tved Parish.

A daughter of (III-A9) Niels Nielsen Myrup (III-A9.B7) Anna Margrethe Nielsdatter Myrup (1812-1884) and her husband Søren Christian Nielsen (1812-1847) in Myruphouse in the years 1836-1853. They bought Myruphouse in 1836 from Jens Sørensen for 200 rigsdaler. The couple is mentioned in the parish registers in 1838-1850 in ’Myruphouse’ in parish register. According to the census from 1845 they lived in ‘Myruphouse’ and in 1850 his widow lived in ‘Myruphouse’ together with her unmarried brother (III-A3.B4) Morten Nielsen Myrup (1808-1888).

Other families in Myrup

Besides Myrupgård (parcel 88) and Myruphouse (parcel 89) other families in Myrup are mentioned who regardless of the Myrup name, have not been the original Myruphouse.

Poul Andersen Horn (1766-1820) and his wife Kirsten Christensdatter’s daughter Anne Cathrine Poulsdatter ’home in Little Myruphouse’ got married in 1823. Poul Pedersen Horn died in 1820 in ’Little Myruphouse’. When she got married the second time in 1820 to Just Christensen she was a widow ’in Myruphouse’. In 1840, they lived ‘in Glæde’. Lars Christensen died in 1849 as smallholder in ’Little Myruphouse’.

The period 1850-1900

In the censuses from 1850 are 2 Myruphouses and a farm in ’Myrup’ and Havkarlshus, in 1860 Myrupgård and Myruphouse, in 1870 Myrupgård, Myruphouse, a house on Myrupgård’s land and ‘Havkarlshus’ and in 1880 and 1890 just Myrupgård. In 1890 census the ’Myrup’ area’s name had changed from Glæde to Lild Klit. There was still a Glæde village.

Family III at Myrupgård

Christen Vabesgaard and Caroline Larsdatter Diernes’s son (III-A3.B17.C4) Kasper Diernæs Vabesgaard Myrup (1850-1940) had according to the 1890 census become the owner of Myrup, but already in 1880 he was working on the farm while his father was away. Kasper Vabesgaard Myrup bought Myrupgård (parcel no. 88a and c, 27b and 2c) 30th June 1884 for 4400 kroner. He got married in 1892 to Christine Hansen Ræhrgaard (1856-1943). In 1890 he sold the parcel no. 27b.

The next two children were born ’in Myrup’ in 1860. In 1860, they had (I-A6.B8) Axel Christensen Myrup (1814-1903) and Anne’s sister (III.A9.B9) Mariane Nielsdatter Myrup (1819-1904) as tenants. They sold the parcel 88b again 22nd October 1861 to Ole Christian Larsen.

According to the legal book an auction deed was written to customs officer Hansen at 22nd July 1853 of the parcel no. 89 Myruphouse from the widow Anna Margrethe Nielsdatter.

Maren Pedersdatter was after her husband’s death married in 1879 to Morten Jensen from Arup (1835-1905). In 1880 and 1890 they lived respectively in Glæde and Lild Klit and were neighbor to Myrupgård. The 1901 census with parcel numbers shows that this house was Myruphouse. According to the legal book a deed of parcel no. 89 was written 1st December 1881 for the widow of Christian Hansen Maren Pedersdatter. Morten Jensen bought parcel no. 88d and 88e 30th November 1881 from Christen Jensen Vabesgaard at Myrupgård.

According to the census 1870 she lived with her son in law Niels Christian Jensen Holme (1836-?) and his wife Maren Kirstine Petersen (1839-?) in a house near Myrupgård. Their daughter was born ‘in Myrup’ in 1876. They lived in Glæde and Lild Klit in 1880 and 1890.

The period 1900-1950

In the census from 1901 the ’Myrup’ area was called Lild Klit. The census commissioner had at first written ’Myrup’, which then were crossed out and changed to ’Lild Klit’. There was also a Glæde By. In 1901 the land register numbers were in the census, and Myrupgård had the parcel 88, a house had 88b and Myruphouse had 89. In the 1906 census the latter was changed to 88de, even though it was both 89 and 88d&e.

Family III at Myrupgård

Kasper Diernæs Vabesgård Myrup’s foster daughter and son in law (III-A3.B17.C4.D2) Martine Kristensen Madsbøll (1894-1965) and Niels Andersen (1900-after 1965) bought Myrupgård (parcels no. 88a&c, 2h, 2l and 2m) 9th November 1927 for 7.000 kroner. He bought more land: the parcels 30g, 43b, 44b and 22e. During the 1930s he sold several parcels to the State for planting, among others 30g and parcels from 88 and 2. They sold the farm in 1947, and farm came out of family ownership.

Little Myruphouse - Myrupgård parcel  (Lille Myruphus)

Ole Christian Larsen (1833-1911) was a widower and lived in Lild Klit on the parcel 88b in the censuses from 1901 and 1906. The 3rd August 1909 Ole Christian Larsen sold parcel no. 88b to his son in law Søren Christian Jensen (1873-?) and daughter Inger Kirstine Olesen (1877-?). In the deed is a passage that gives Ole Christian Larsen pension (‘aftægt’) for life which means that the new owner provides accommodation and support. Søren Christian Larsen sold the property 16th December 1925 to Christian Olesen, who sold it 25th June 1929 to Vilhelm Koldkjær, whose widow Thekla Aurelia b. Behrmann took over the house in 1939. In 1942 she sold parcel no. 88b to the State.

Myruphouse (Myruphus)

Morten Jensen and Maren Pedersdatter lived in 1901 in Myruphouse on the parcel 89, and in 1906 Morten Jensen’s widow Maren Jensen on parcel 88de. If this means Myruphouse or she had moved to another house parceled from Myrupgård I do not know.

Their son Kristian Frederik Hansen Jensen (1883-?) livedparcel 88d&e and 89b in Lild Klit. According to the legal book he bought the parcels 89, 88d and 88e by an auction deed the 10th September 1910. The parcel 88e was united with 88a, maybe in 1914, when Kristian Frederik Hansen sold 89 and 88d to tailor Kr. Andersen.

The 16th September 1929 there is an auction deed on parcel no. 89 and 88d to Frands Kristian Larsen (1859-1936?). In 1930 Frans Kristian Larsen lived on parcel 88d, a parcel from Myrupgård, and in 1925 he lived according to the census on parcel 87-88, whatever that means. According to the legal book with a transcript from the protocol of drifting sand the State bought parcel 89b for planting. A deed transfers 89a and 88d to the heirs of Frans Kristian Larsen, who sold to Frans Kr. Larsen's brother Casper Christian Larsen. In 1942 the parcel numbers 89a and 88d were sold to the State.
